A BBC book of the week I think not long before we went away.

Very good Aussie (although I think JH is English) crime thriller. Set in a small rural farming community (near Melbourne) hit by drought and murder. There are 2 murders – one (3 victims) current and one 20 years old.

A suspect in the old one (now a Melbourne cop) is pulled back to the town as one of the current victims was his friend and gave him an (unnecessary) alibi for the old murder. The 2 plots unravel in parallel - the old murder rather predictable, the current one in a shocking and unpredictable way.

Very clever plotting.
