Haven’t read one of these for years.
I used to love James Lee Burke, but that was in a different place and this now seems pretty overwrought, with a manic and deeply schizophrenic hero, Robicheaux (you can’t really combine saintliness with the degree of violent anger he contains, so a lot of the shit is dumped on his pal Clete Purcel, certainly in this book).
I loved the early books (of which this is one) but that was then!.
