An early book, I think, very much coming of age/ 'Catcher in the Rye' (have I ever read this?) type of book.

The coming of age is bracketed around a serial killer story, but this is almost a framework on which to hang the story of a kid brought up in rural USA in the 1940s, who ends up in New York as a writer (writes 'A Quiet Belief in Angels') so we have a self-referential text.

Pretty good for an early novel.
